Dave Freeman: Sawbill Guide
Dave Freeman, Sawbill's head guide, has the made Boundary Waters and the surrounding area his home for the past 10 summers.
Dave Freeman was first bitten by the Boundary Waters bug on a canoe trip to Alton Lake at the age of 12. After that first trip, he returned to the BWCAW every chance he could, and started working at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters at the age of 17.

Dave has made Sawbill and the surrounding lakes and rivers his summer home for the last 10 years. After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1999 with a degree in Anthropology and Biology, he began exploring the winter wilderness as a guide for Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, outside of Ely, MN.

When Dave is not working as a canoeing, kayaking, or winter camping guide, he is busy introducing students and teachers to the importance of wilderness through the Wilderness Classroom, a non-profit organization Dave founded in 2000. Over the past 6 years, Dave and fellow educators have used the Internet to teach 3rd- to 8th-grade students about the importance of wilderness, by allowing students to join wilderness expeditions using their classrooms' computers.

Dave’s first Wilderness Classroom “learning adventure” was a 6-week, solo ski and snowshoe trek through the BWCAW. Since then, thousands of students and teachers have joined Dave on five additional learning adventures, including a 1,100 mile trek by canoe and dogsled from Grand Portage, MN to Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, and an 80 day, 2,348 mile paddle from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico along the Mississippi River.

In the process, Dave has spent over 60 weeks exploring wilderness areas near and far by canoe and dogsled. In April and May of 2005, Dave is leading a group of six wilderness educators on 5 week canoeing expedition through the Peruvian Amazon. Four hundred teachers and 12,000 students will learn along with them though their website,
